Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does TutorHub recruit their tutors?
It is really important for us to choose the best tutors . We either work closely with colleges and universities and are able to spot and recruit talented tutors. Our tutors need to be highly recommended by their teachers and lecturers with require references to prove this. Our tutors need to have at least grades 8 and preferably 9s or their GCSEs and are studying the subject they tutor in at Advanced or degree level. They need to be successful at interview and show that they have great communication skills, patience, understanding and be inspiring.
  • Can I have more than one free meet the tutor session?
Yes you can. We want both the student and the tutor to be happy working together.
  • How do I pay?
You are automatically invoiced at the end of each lesson after the tutor and tutee marks the lesson as complete. Payment is made via debit card through STRIPE payment services and you are immediately sent a receipt.
  • How often should I have tutorials?
This is up to you of course. You can book one off tutorials when you need them -perhaps you need help with a particular topic or assignment? However, it is most beneficial to meet your tutor regularly. Your tutor begins to better understand your needs and you begin to make stronger progress. Once or twice a week is recommended.
  • What do I need in terms of equipment?
You need to have a laptop, tablet or PC with a camera and microphone. To make full use of our interactive whiteboard we strongly recommend you purchase an pen and tablet. This allows you to write on the screen alongside the tutor. The tutor can check your work and help you as you go. A digital pen and pad can be purchased on Amazon and cost about £20. (We have to connection to Amazon). Click on the link below.
  • What is the free meet the tutor session?
It is really important to build a rapport with a tutor and to discuss what you would like and need from tutorials in advance. Tell them about yourself. It's a good idea to tell them where you feel your weaknesses are and where you most need help. Sometimes students like to work alongside or in advance of the topics they are covering in class. This helps build confidence and deeper understanding. Other students prefer to go back to topics they had maybe struggled with before or need help revising on. Discuss what sort of resources you would like to use in the tutorials. Practice questions for example? Remember you can easily upload screenshots to our whiteboard. If you are happy with your meeting you can easily book lessons online according to your tutor's availability.
  • How do I book lessons?
After your free meet the tutor session you can agree regular times and these can be booked in advance. Alternately, you can book one off lessons through your personal login page.
  • How do I get paid?
You get paid at the end of each month directly into your bank account via the Stripe split payments system. Please make sure that you mark each lesson complete and complete the short lesson report.
  • How many hours do I work?
You decide this by setting your personal availability on your profile. Students can request sessions directly through our system and await your confirmation. In most cases the a regular slot is agreed by you and the client. You are able to book them in yourself through your login page on our platform.
  • What equipment do I need?
A laptop or PC with camera and mic. It is essential that you have the pen and pad to provide fully interactive lessons using the video and whiteboard software provided. If you don't already have one, they are available on Amazon. Please click below. We can also assist you in purchasing one by deducting a small amount from your first lessons to cover the cost. The equipment will be sent to your home address.
  • How much do I get paid?
You decide the rate of pay. However, we advise our tutors on how much to charge on our platform based on their experience and ratings. Our aim is to provide students with affordable one to one tuition and ensuring our tutors are rewarded for the talent and skills they are able to provide. New tutors with little experience should be able to earn £15 per hour. With more experience, great ratings and higher qualifications tutors can expect to earn £20 or more. Just to be transparent. A fixed £5 charge is taken which contributes towards the cost of the platform, LessonSpace interactive whiteboard and video conferencing facilities, the booking and payment system, administration costs, the website and advertising, and paying relevant taxes.
  • How do I become a tutor?
If you are studying A Levels or a degree and keen to use your skills to help younger students please apply via our website. Complete your profile and provide us with your qualifications. • How is TutorHub compliant with the new Jan 2023 law regulating Tuition companies ?
Tutor companies have become much more regulated since Jan 2023. TutorHub.online is compliant with the new regulations which require us to be set up as an Employment agency. That is: ●Tuition companies can introduce a tutor to work directly for a client, taking a fee/commission from the client in return. As the tutor is paid separately by the client and the tutor's fee is never under the control of the tuition agency, VAT is only liable on the tuition agency's fee/commission. VAT is not normally payable by tutors delivering tuition personally (either because it is below the VAT threshold or because the tutor is a sole trader). In order to fulfil these requirements - all payments at TutorHub go through a third party i.e. TutorCruncher using Stripe. They split the payment between the tutor and the agency. To date this is the only acceptable means of payment which adheres to the new regulations in place. Other key points regarding the legalities of working with tutors in a way that is HMRC and EAS compliant: ● The Tutor Agency acts in a similar way to a recruiter and has a contract with the client (i.e., parent, or student), detailing what the fee is and how it is calculated ● The Employment Agency is not responsible for paying tutors, the parent is ● The Employment Agency cannot try to solve disputes between the tutor and the parent - once they have made the introduction, the employment agency has to step out completely ● The Employment Agency cannot call parents to give regular monthly ‘check ins’ on a tutor’s progress. They can however contact the parent for a check in after the initial introduction and first lesson. ● The tutor sets their own fee, and the Employment Agency cannot set levels of pay (although it can provide advice to a tutor on what levels of pay might be appropriate, it cannot set the rate for the tutor) When you offer a job to a tutor, you have to ask them what their rate is, rather that say, ‘we are offering you £x per hour for this job’. Tutor agencies are allowed to guide tutors on, ‘market rates’. You then must tell the parent how much the tutor will charge them and how much you will separately charge for your commission for the work they have booked. ● The Employment Agency cannot terminate the tutor’s services, only the parent or tutor can. ● VAT needs only to be charged by the Employment Agency on their own fee (not the portion payable to the tutor). TutorHub.online does not charge an introduction fee. However £5 of lesson costs goes towards administration, Lesson Space interactive whiteboard video platform facilities, the booking and payment platform, the website, advertising and recruitment and applicable taxes. This fee is not in addition to the cost of lessons, it is already included in the price. We advise our Tutors on the price to charge for lessons. We aim to provide the best services at the lowest prices so that as many students as possible benefit from one to one tuition and can be successful in education.
